Just After: Home Theater and Wine Cellar Design

We have another project reveal to share!

A wonderful family with young kids approached us wanting an entertainment space in the basement of their older home. They wanted the space to be versatile and fun for years to come with the ability to comfortably watch movies, access drinks and snacks, and host parties all in one space.

To accommodate all three of their desires, Bollinger Design Group created a home theater with a wet bar, game table, and even a wine cellar!

Besides the challenge of planning a space to accommodate multiple activities, we were presented with three architectural challenges:

  • Low ceilings, structural posts and beams, and HVAC venting
  • An irregular foundation footprint
  • A circular fireplace with a firebox at a weird angle

Despite these challenges, we were able to give this family exactly what they wanted. Let’s start with the home theater!

Home Theater

From custom foot rails to a matching pattern on the bar stools and carpet, every tiny detail of this home theater was taken into account. We chose a burgundy, camel and black color palette with brushed stainless accents to recreate the ambiance of a 1930’s theater. We covered the circular fireplace with square-inch polished mosaic tiles and added a stair-step façade to provide dimensional depth and interest, as well as disguise the structural post and beam.

One of the most crucial steps in home theater design is inhibiting sound transmission. Without sound control, the sound would echo throughout the space and likely travel through the ceiling to the rest of the house. To control the sound, we installed insulation between the two floors, RC channeling for the ceiling drywall, acoustic paneling to the walls, and cork flooring around the game table and wet bar.

Another crucial step to home theater design is tiered seating. We installed stepped-risers with eight theater seats, eight bar stools, and four game table chairs. As the “before” of the space was an unfinished basement, we only have the “after” photos.

Wet Bar & Game Table

The wet bar and viewing bar cabinets are made out of cherry wood and covered with absolute black granite. The wet bar includes a refrigerator, ice maker, sink, dishwasher, and microwave oven. The bar and game table provide extra theater seating and match the Art Deco style of the entire theater. This small space behind the theater allows the family to entertain with easy access to drinks and snacks.

Wine Cellar

Last, but certainly not least, this quaint wine cellar is perfect for the family to easily access wine in the basement and to host parties. We installed several 24-bottle wine racks on top of stone wallpaper. Because wine cellars are high in humidity, we chose black rust slate for the floor.
